The Dark Knight's Dark Tale!

untitled-1-copy_FaPS6_3342Superheroes work on an agenda; an unsaid rule that delegates them the responsibility of saving the world from the dark forces. Bestowed with superpowers abundant, these ‘men on a mission’ have enthralled us since time immemorial. Darth Vader, The Joker and Lex Luther are mentioned in hushed tones, while Superman, Spiderman, Captain Planet and their tribe have transcended imagination to establish a stronghold on the psyche of those who dare to step into the world of fantasy. Amidst the clutter of these invincible superheroes, a mortal hero had risen around a century ago. He couldn’t dodge bullets, jump 30 feet across buildings, evade laser beams or stare-stop a pellet burst. A disturbing childhood, a dark past and black-winged creatures spurred his pent-up emotions, eventually creating a merciless caped crusader; a criminal’s worst nightmare. A legend was born and a legion ensued. And, we had a hero who was vulnerable, emotional, given to carnal pleasures and yet, fearless, intelligent and disarmingly charming – a man every other man can identify with.

Batman is not your archetypal superhero. Yet, he is the character our frustration for the corrupt system can feed of. He is what you have always dreamt to be, sans the mask. Despite his dual-faced nature, Batman’s likeability lies in the character’s perfect manifestation of a vengeful, wronged man. And his dark bearings hold little to restrain the aura that precedes him. Batman is a superhero who has overcome his ‘worst fear’ to rid the world of theirs. Ironically, he is one of the very few superheroes who have no detractors among the people he fights for. Cloaked by the shadows, he battles the very evil that sullied his youth. The ‘Dark Knight’ finds a screen representation this Friday and there’s more to the event than a visual treat. It will reiterate a message!

Take a look around you and witness a murkiness similar to Gotham City. You are left with a choice. And if I may whack a line from ‘Batman Begins’, it is not what you are but what you do that defines you. Find the crusader inside you!

Pssst…there is another masked hero who fights crime outside the concrete jungle. More on the ‘Phantom’ later…

For an interesting reflection on what actually underpins the stories and their ethical frameworks - see this article: We Can Be Superheroes, Too on my other blog...

I think the whole appeal of this movie is going to be pinned on the role of Heath Ledger... I have seen a few promos and he looks spectacular!!!!

I’m sorry I cannot add to the debate on the superhero qualities of Batman since i lost interest in him as a child when I learnt that the Batmobile would pollute the world more than what would be enviromental implication os Spidey leaping off buildings...

its silly but that is what i thought as a kid!!!

Christian Bale is as good as Heath Ledger and I’m sure the movie will be kick-ass. As far as your ’losing interest in Batman’ is concerned, I feel you haven’t read enough of this character. And since you have grown up now, you can revive the interest.

Sometimes you get more famous after you’re dead. like, Kurt Cobain for instance. I don’t know if he would have been as famous as he is if he were alive. the death creates more mystery around the person, at least it does for me. Its the same case for Heath. i hope the movie turns out great :)

Though I am not so interested in all these superheroes now, still I like them. Because as a kid I used to watch a lot of all these. With the rise of 2-D and 3-D animation, these super natural themes are catching attention once again. It takes us into an imaginative world for sometime.

Ya, you are right. Batman is not our archetypal superhero, with his double-faced personality. Still the character is interesting as something powerful and mysterious. Whatever deviates from the natural, it’s obvious to catch attention. I have not seen The Dark night, but I would certainly watch it sometime. It must be good.

Absolutely Sharmila. Heath Ledger is more popular now than when he was alive. However, his part is in The Dark Knight does deserve appreciation.

:) yup. but thats unfortunate, id prefer being alive and not-so-popular than being dead and popular! but then, thats the way how things have turned out for Health. i really hope he gets the appreciation he deserve, though he isnt really there to see it.

Don’t worry Alpheus and Sharmila, Heath Ledger must be there in the sky and watching the film as well. LOL!!!

Heath Ledger must be thanking us all as well, for we are appreciating him and discussing about him a lot. Poor guy! he died because of his own foolishness. What to do? It’s the system of the world for ages, people get honour for their good deeds only after the death. Heath Ledger is also one among them.
May the soul rest in peace and happyness.

But take care, he may come in your dream sometime- the batman.LOL!!
